Tough Two Days On Jury Duty

After all these days of watching Court TV....it was my turn.....my turn to serve my community by sitting on the jury of a man accused of 3 counts of unlawful sexual conduct and 3 counts of unlawful sexual battery with a girl 15 years old.....he was 44. He was her horseback riding instructor. The two day trial was gruelling for me. Those who know me know Pat and I have been involved helping sexual abuse victimes for over 30 years.....yet I also was involved in a case in which a minor accused one of the Toboso teachers of the same conduct. The female teacher escaped the loss of her career and the devastation of her life because she was innocent and the case was dismissd before it went to trial.....So there I sat Wednesday and Thursday........listening to the compelling evidence for and against this girl's claim. She said/He said.....and we the jury were to have to decide who was telling the truth. HEAVY STUFF! Although I can give the final result in a sentence....the process was exhausting. (I woke up at 4 AM the second day thinking it would be a hung jury). .....And what if we made the wrong decision....what if we sent an innocent man to jail.....or didn't vindicate a 15 year old who's life would either way be permenantly affected.....and the hard evidence was slim. In the jury room we all introduced ourselves and then began the hard work of sorting it all out.....every sentence...every witness....every detail.....his story.....her story......and then.....the tape. The detectives had the girl call him and tell him she had reported his behavior to a local church youth leader. It was he who called the police. The reaction of the accused man was immediate and spontaneous....."YOU MUST LIE".....he told her....."if you don't I'll be sent to jail!" The rest of the story can be read in the two day story in the advocate at the following links....

The "rest of the story" for me includes:
- I realize even more how the male sex drive and very poor judgement can cause some men to do stupid, awful, family destroying....innocence destroying....unlawful things.
- An appreciation for the youth leader who "did the right thing," the social workers, Kid's Assessment Team, police, prosecution and defence attorneys, judge and fellow jurors that are at the backbone of a process that makes this country great.
I will never be quite the same having had this experience.

Visit To The New Licking Valley Elementary School

The long awaited new school consolidating the previous 4 elementary building is now OCCUPIED......

It is a beautiful, very functional, technologically up to date facility which I'm proud to say was launched and planned for when I served on the School Board.

....but a school is PEOPLE! Here Zoe and Addy pose with their new Principal, Sherry Crum who is a dear friend and excellent leader. She has that rare combination of savy, leadership, competence and personality that fit her to the important job of building human beings.....and ....

.....so does this man. Friend and former longtime Newark Principal, Jim Hoover, came out of retirement to serve as Principal at Perry school and assist in the transition into the new facility. Here he is approximaty 4 minutes before the end of his long illustrious career....doing what Jim does best....connecting to kids. For more pictures of the girl's rooms, lockers and friends....keep an eye on Zoe's blog at zoetothemaz.blogspot.com.

A Sunday Drive Home From Church...

These fall days are so beautiful! As I was driving home from church yesterday and had the camera on the seat I decided to just take some random...run of the mill ....regular shots along the way. Since Beth loves Ohio and Sam and Meg are in distant lands...these are for you!

Friday's Visit To The Davis-Shai House

What a community treasure! I knew they moved the house I loved to look at as a kid on Rt 79 on my way to Aunt Odessa's house at "the lake." I knew they moved it somewhere "out behind Wal-Mart" .....but what a surprise when I turned the corner and saw it so beautifully restored and welcoming.

........beautifully landscaped and open by appointment for luncheons and special occasions.

Lunch With Two Very Dear Friends

Carolyn and Linda are two colleagues from my education days. They taught a class called teacher effectiveness training which was life changing for me for one big reason......They taught me to LISTEN! I was pretty skilled at talking at the time but found that the greatest tool in building relationships, counseling marriages or sexually abused was the act of EMPATHETIC LISTENING. For that training I am deeply indebted to these two!
"One of the greatest hungars of the human heart is to BE UNDERSTOOD."
We now meet for lunch occasionally and LISTEN to one another!

The beautifully moved and restored home in the previous pictures is the brianchild of Carolyn and Jan. From the idea to save the house which sat along the Ohio - Erie Canal in the mid 1800's to restoring it to a beautiful destination in Heath.... these two have provided amazing leadership!

Lunches are delicious and completely staffed by community volunteers such as this guy.....Dan.....Jan's husband and a longtime friend. His father planted powerful concepts in my head and heart as my Sunday School teacher when I was 9 years old.

Fall Is Arriving.......

On my way home I paused to take a few shots around the Felumlee Farm down the road......

....drives home from anywhere in town can turn into "touring" adventures........

.....which always make me think of Bob and Claudia.....the Master Tourers!
